About Us

Who We Are

We are a literary and topical book discussion group in North Phoenix. Founded July 2009. Typical meeting is about 10 to 15 members. Find more information about our group on Meetup.com.

Time & Date

We meet monthly, currently on Friday evenings in the Paradise Valley mall area. Members can see the exact location on our Meetup.com page.

How We Work

We primarily read books reviewed by NPR on their radio shows or website. We read both fiction and nonfiction, and typically choose 2-3 books per month.  Members are not expected to read all books selected for that month’s meeting. All members are welcome at the group’s meetings, whether you had time to read some, all or none of the books for the month.

Each of us listens to NPR for many reasons, but all of us agree that one of the most important features of the programming is the thoughtful and polite delivery of news, commentary and opinion. This is the tone we strive for in our meetings. Please join us!

How We Choose our Books

Members can suggest books to the group which they hear about on NPR’s programming. We keep a running list of suggested titles for future months’ reading. Each month members take our online poll to determine which books we read the following month. Our goal is to choose books about 6 to 8 weeks in advance of the meeting so there’s plenty of time for everybody to buy/borrow and read the books.

Heather, the book Priceless, who is the author? trying to locate it and find several books entitled Priceless. Thanks, Cheryl

  2. Hey Cheryl,

Sorry for confusion. Full title is “Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World’s Stolen Treasures”. It’s by Robert K. Wittman. It’s our December book. For October 2010 we’re reading “Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception Across the Color Line” by Martha A. Sandweiss, and “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Our calendar in online at the Meetup.com site, at http://www.meetup.com/Heard-about-it-on-NPR-Book-Club-of-Phoenix/calendar/
